By Sarah Ilyas Ehtasham-The great Sufi band has been nominated in one of the India’s biggest music awards “GIMA” this year, in the category of “Best Rock Album” for their album ‘Andholan’.
While talking to a newspaper the band expressed their joy at the prestigious nomination. The Lahore based band which has mostly produced Sufi, Rock, Alternative Rock and Jazz songs have won the hearts of Indian music aficionados.
Mekaal Hasan Band was formed in 2001; they have produced three albums to date. The band released their debut album “Sampooran” in 2004, followed by “Saptak” in 2010 .The Sufi band comprises of five members, songwriter and guitarist Mekaal Hasan, Mohammad Ahsan Papu on flute, Sharmistha Chatterjee on vocals, Sheldon D’Silva on bass and Gino Banks on drums.
‘Andholan’ was recorded, written, mixed and composed by the great maestro Mekaal Hasan himself in Lahore. This eight track album includes Kafi’s and Sufi poetry by “Baba Bulley Shah” and “Shah Hussain”. The new vocalist from India, Sharmistha Chatterjee has also written two songs -“Megh” and “Sindhi”- for the album.
‘Andholan’ is an online phenomenon. The band released the album on iTunes, Amazon and Taazi. In 2014, the band won ‘Song of the year’ in Express Tribune’s critics’ choice awards and topped the Dawn Newsreader’s poll, for the track “Ghungat”.
