Coke Studio Season 9: Momina Mustehsan, Pakistan’s newest celebrity sensation.

Coke Studio Season 9: Momina Mustehsan, Pakistan’s newest celebrity sensation.

By Shershah Ahmed: Recreating or covering a piece by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is always a risky business. His sheer talent and power have reached epic proportions, to the point where people will view any attempts to recreate it, inferior to the original. However, props to Coke Studio for tackling this monumental song, that is Afreen Afreen and who better to helm the project than Rahat Fateh Ali Khan himself. The real star of the song though, is newcomer Momina Mustehsan who makes her debut appearance on Coke Studio, even though she has been part of the music scene for quite a while.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s rendition of his uncle’s track is effortless, effulgent and truly peerless, though most people would certainly agree Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan reigns supreme. Momina Mustehsan however has taken Pakistan by storm, with an explosion of accolades showered her way, and Twitter trends going wild. Regardless of the fact that her part in the song was quite limited, her presence and her voice have captivated the audience in a way that few people have done so. Quoted as saying ‘music is a passion for me, not a profession’, let’s take a look at some of her more worthy honors.

The Scholar

One wouldn’t expect someone with a degree in biochemical engineering and applied mathematics to be such an avant-garde musician, let alone someone currently enrolled in Industrial Engineering. However this is exactly the case here. Most people can barely juggle their hobbies with just one degree. Growing up casually singing in front of people and having a firm grasp on instruments such as the guitar, violin and keyboard, Momina’s musical strengths go far beyond mere singing.

A Multi-Layered Musical History

After posting various covers on her Instagram and SoundCloud channel, she made an appearance on Nescafe Basement back in 2014, which was much loved to say the least, as well as being a part of the soundtrack to the Bollywood film ‘Ek Villain’ alongside Soch the Band. All these previous efforts make her jump to Coke Studio a no-brainer.

Even after all this however, she remains very much grounded and is not a big fan of the spotlight coming her way and does not consider herself a celebrity. This humble nature makes it even easier to appreciate all her talents and accomplishments and as far as Pakistan is concerned, she’s here to stay. It is quite obvious that this is certainly not the last we have seen of Momina Mustehsan, and that in itself is a blessing!
