How did you end up becoming such a successful musician?

Define successful … to me being rich and famous is not success … real success to me is when one is loved, admired and adored for the work they do … if that is what you mean by success then i am pretty successful I would say … I can probably reply with an answer that builds me up as the hero and I can take all the credit for whatever hard work I did for being where I am today … but the honest truth is that one’s ability to be good at something is a gift that is given to him or her by Almighty … how much he or she builds up on that is where hard work comes in … and no hard work is good enough if lady luck is not on your side …

What brought you to this field?

The will to survive, the urge to create, the insecurity of not being loved … I was kicked out … I was homeless … I was penniless … so I said to myself what the hell let’s be honest if I won’t try today I might not have a tomorrow to try it then …

How would you describe music?

Best kind of magic that has the power to manipulate one’s feelings by taking hold of one’s emotions with the illusion of one’s having control over it …

What is Nouman’s definition of music?

I just stated that above …

Tell our readers about your first success in the music industry and the unprecedented successes which followed?

My first success was with the songs “Dard-E-Tanhai” and “Mein Chala” featuring in Mahesh Bhatt’s film “Jashnn” … the film was not a huge success regardless that it was a good film with a good storyline … but the songs did very well and are still doing very well … still the most downloaded song Dard e Tanhai … Dard E Tanhai topped all charts …

Then I topped the charts again, when I worked as the music director for the film “Yamla Pagla Deewana” with my song “Charhade Rang” … I did not sing the song myself coz I’m not insecure like many other singers come music directors who want to sing every song themselves … that is very insecure … I did what a music director is supposed to do be honest with his work and get the right person for the song … I did that and that song also topped charts in 2011 …

While working on the music of “Yamla Pagala Deewana” I made a single with the same name “Yamla Pagala Deewana” coz I wanted to show people that I had more to my music then just one genre which most singers have … it topped charts as well …

Then came “Tere Naina” … for as long as I can remember wanted to sing a duet, being a fan of Lata Ji and Muhammad Rafi who had a lot of duets together and good ones I was dying to sing a duet … I made a song Tere Naina and started thinking which female voice would suit my song best … Fariha Pervez the name came to me and I asked her and she being a very kind person said yes of course after listening to the song which she loved …

Recently did a song with her again called “Dil Janay” …IMG_0010

Your fans would love to know about your latest collaboration with Fareeha Pevaiz. Do tell us the details?

When I compose a song I think about its treatment and the direction I want the sound to go into … as I really like collaborations I’m always keen on working with other artists … after making “Dil Janay” I went to the board thinking who can really sing my song well and can complement it with their voice … I thought of Hadiqa, Shazia Manzoor, Humera Arshad, Shabnam Majeed but again I thought Fariha Pervez would be a better option not because all these other great big singers couldn’t do justice to the song but because the song is made in a scale that suits Fariha better … Plus the magic worked in “Tere Naina” so I thought let’s continue to cash up on that … I would love to sing with all of the singers I mentioned earlier if given the opportunity … I did sing with Shabnam Majeed on an OST “Meri Zindagi Hai Tu” it did very well …

Do you come from a family of musicians, or were you the first one in your family to pursue a career in music?

No I don’t come from a family of musicians … I wish I did at least then I would have had the opportunity to polish up on my skills at a young age and not discover them when my hair started turning white … I was the first one to pursue a career in music in my family and it was not appreciated … I was called a fool … Taunted, that im wasting my time … but as an emotional person I can’t say no the heart coz it drives me I have no control over the bugger …

From whom do you seek your music inspirations? Who is your mentor?

I have a lot of inspirations … I seriously mean a lot … starting from S.D Burman, Madan Mohan, Hemant Kumar, Master Abdullah, Tufail Niyazi sab, Lata Ji, Muhammad Rafi sab, Wazir Afzal sab, Sajjad Ali … in the west my inspirations are of course the king of Pop Michael Jackson, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Steven Tylor, AC/DC …

My mentor is Ustad Rais Khan of Mewat Gharana the greatest Sitar Player in the world period …

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years, in the music industry?

That is something I can’t say much about … the way things are going for the Pakistani music industry I am a little unsure about a lot of things … but like I say you can take the music away from me but you can’t take it out of me … So on a positive note I will be around making better music trying to do what I do best …

Do you believe the Pakistani Music Industry will become successful again, as it once was?

Depends on a lot of things … I often hear the people say that “oh the singers and the artists are not making songs” they don’t really know that we are … we always are but there are not that many mediums left to play our music on … all national channels are playing foreign content … most radios are playing foreign content also … new kids with websites and blogs only promote singers who have worked in Bollywood coz this to them is cool somehow which makes no sense … no one has a genuine unbiased opinion about music anymore … the popular kids with no talent are promoted more coz they are the hip crowd and the kids with real talent are looked down on coz of their financial or social short coming … so if we want to see our Pakistani music industry thrive again we have to support it … the people need to buy our legal content from legal sites like Taazi and original CDs … they need to like, love, encourage and respect national talent … support them when they need it … the media needs to play their part by playing our content … promote our national talent old and new, famous and struggling alike … bloggers needs to get out of their cool and not so cool biased zone and truly blog about reality not what they consider reality … so we all need to change … and to all my fellow musicians be honest be true and stop hating the others for their success …

Do you have a favourite band or musician, or a particular genre of music that you listen to?

All my inspirations are my favourites … I like all genres of music as long as they are good …
