By Khaya Ahmed:Zoe Viccaji is no stranger to the art of music, having begun her journey at the fifteen when she picked up the guitar. After brief stints with various underground bands, Zoe spread her wings and continued on as a solo artist, writing and releasing countless tracks in English and later, in Urdu. However, it was her performance in Coke Studio as a backup vocalist where she truly shined and caught the eye of audiences everywhere. Ever since then, she has been a force to be reckoned with. Not afraid to experiment with different genres, her latest single, Jaanay Do, is the perfect example of her unique take on the art of music.
The song was released by Salt Arts, an entertainment agency that is faithful to promoting an artist’s creativity, allowing them unleash their potential to the fullest. Jaanay Do is no different, having sunk its teeth into us the moment we saw the teaser; an elegant snippet of what the song had to offer coated in glitter and gold. The aesthetic of the teaser is a perfect homage to Egyptian royalty complete with Zoe’s resemblance to Cleopatra, however, it is the mellow electronic music combined with Zoe’s beautiful voice that provides the icing to this funky cake.
The teaser did its job and ever since its release, Jaanay Do has been taking over the airwaves and social media which comes as no surprise considering it’s groovy and retro sound which will have you swaying from side to side. The producer of the song, Mubashir Admani has honed Zoe’s strengths as a vocalist and has come up with something truly incredible, a harmonious track with a simple hopeful message; to let go of past mistakes and hate. All in all, the track oozes fun and will invoke the days of Nazia Hassan and her anthem Disco Deewane, in a time when disco in Pakistan was all but declared dead.
Salt Arts and Zoe Viccaji have come together not only to completely reinvent her as an artist but create a music movement to breathe new life into a dying genre. It seems that Jaanay Do was only the beginning as Salt Arts is also curating a musical gig starring Zoe Viccaji which is set to take place next month in Karachi. As for Zoe’s future activities? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned into Taazi to find out!
