By Shershah Ahmed: Being the former vocalist of Jal, Farhan Saeed needs no introduction. After leaving Jal in 2014 to focus on his solo career, he has exhibited his talents in film, music and television. His latest single ‘Koi Rokay Na Mujhe’, coupled with a music video is hauntingly somber, and as unstoppable as the title of the song suggests.
The music video directed by Humza Yousaf, and featuring one of Pakistan’s leading models Iman Ali, grabs your attention from the very start. It features a slightly exaggerated but mostly accurate look at the elite class and their high flying lifestyle. But the video establishes early on that all is not what it seems to be. Farhan Saeed and Iman Ali are clearly the protagonists in the story painted by the video, and the antagonist being Sajid Hassan who seems to be the person in charge who everyone is supposed to proverbially or literally bow to. He also seems to be a bit unhinged considering he shoots and aims guns at people for fun, or for minor mishaps such as dropping trays. The camera work is done very artfully and the tasteful use of lighting adds to the melancholic mood established by the story and the song itself. A dance scene around the midway point between Iman Ali and Farhan Saeed is beautifully shot with smoke effects and blue lighting that gives an ethereal effect to the proceedings.
The video however takes a dramatic 180 degree turn when we see Farhan Saeed’s character succumbing to the same rage and decadence that is exhibited by the antagonist earlier. He begins to seem more and more unhinged after he shoots two men in cold blood, much to the horror of Iman Ali’s character who has a flashback about how her parents were killed in the same way by such a man. Her acting is superb as her eyes exhibit the same pain and fear she felt back then, which hardens into resolve. A massive shootout erupts between the den of villains against persons unknown, but we assume them to be allies of Iman Ali’s character, who finish off everyone including Farhan Saeed’s character who tries to take Iman Ali to safety, only to realize she is not with him anymore. The video ends on a depressing note, with a touch of hopefulness to it where we see Iman Ali’s character finally free of her torture.
The track itself does a wonderful job of establishing the grim tone set by the video, and the two work hand in hand to deliver the story to the viewer. Starting off with a moody piano melody coupled with Farhan Saeed’s crooning vocals, which lead to a highly impressive high note, the song progresses into the main beat that is simple yet mesmerizing. Farhan Saeed’s vocals are as always stellar, with him hitting various high and low notes that also retain their sense of emotion. The song also includes some elements of dubstep in the middle which is an unorthodox choice for such a song, but it is done so tastefully that it definitely works. The underlying piano melody throughout the song is simple, yet effective and really ties the whole song together making it a track that cannot be listened to just once!
Adding to his already substantial list of hit tracks, Farhan Saeed’s latest outing in ‘Koi Rokay Na Mujhe’ is definitely one that will earn him a bunch of more accolades and we cannot wait to see what he comes up with next. For more releases by Farhan Saeed, stay tuned to Taazi!
