|| BY AHMAD UZAIR – Pakistan’s music Industry is passing through a tough phase for the past few years. Although the frequency of music getting released might have increased over the period of time but it has failed to produce big artists and smash hits like it once used to in the past. However every now and then, there is someone who turns out to be a breath of fresh air. Here we are talking about a newcomer MAHA ALI KAZMI who with her only second video out recently ,has earned alot of praise from the critics aswell as a large fan base. She debuted with the song called “Nazar” last year. But it was earlier this month, that she released the video of her latest single JANA NAHIN that is making rounds both on online forums as well as print media.
Shot at a picturesque location, ‘Jana Nahin’ has been directed by the amazingly multi-talented Aania Shah. The song is about a girl in search of love and companionship
I recently had the chance of talking to Maha, the young star hailing from the city of lights, Karachi. Here is what she has to say about her musical career, latest video and her future plans.
Hello Maha, Tell us a bit about your musical beginnings. What was the turning point in your life when you found out your love for music and what were the odds in pursuing your passion?
It’s one of those things you don’t plan. Things that just happen to you. Music happened to me. When I first took to the stage, I knew my purpose. I knew it right then in my heart that this is what I want to do in life — to sing. On stage I’m uninhibited. I have no reservations and I don’t care about what people think. I’m there for more selfish reasons. For myself. To sing.
I wouldn’t say there have been any insurmountable challenges, but what goes without saying is that the industry lacks a basic support network for the artists. There aren’t any record labels; sponsors are few and far between. You have to fund all your projects yourself.
Your first notable appearance was on Cornetto Music Icon last year. How was the experience of sharing stage with some huge names? In what way do you think it has helped you evolve as an artist?
It was a phenomenal experience. Working with some of the industry bigwigs not only gave me self confidence, but helped me a great deal along the learning curve.
Cornetto Music Icon experience helped me prepare for the release of my debut single, Nazar. It gave me a firsthand studio recording experience. Eventually when we recorded Nazar, it all seemed effortless, due to my previous exposure to recording sessions at CMI.
Recently you were making rounds both in online and print media regarding your latest release JANA NAHIN. How has been the response so far?
Response has been extraordinary, quite unexpected too. My Facebook fan page inbox is inundated with thousands of messages from fans.
Tell us about the concept behind the song.
It’s a song about love and parting; a bitter end to what could have been beautiful and a harmonious union of hearts; a song in the remembrance of love found, love lost; something that turns the fate around, that leaves a trail of memories, some bitter, some sweet, along the path of dreams of yesterday and yonder.
The video, conceptualized by Aania Shah, is about a girl in search of love and companion ship. She despairs of the possibility of ever finding love but one day as she is taking a stroll across the beach, an empty bottle washes up to the shore. Somehow it arrested her attention and she picks it up, looks at it intently and discards it. Next day another bottle washes up to the shore and this time it has a ring in it. Intrigued by all of it, she takes it as a sign her beloved sent it to her. On the third day, she comes back to the beach, expecting to meet the person, but there’s no one. The song is about series of disappointments.
Any special message to your fans? When can we expect an album from your end?
There’s a quote from the movie pursuit of happiness. It is will smith telling his son, “You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period”. That’s pretty much my message to everyone. If you want something, go get it, and don’t let anyone put you down.
Album is slated for the fall of 2015. Her latest tracks can be downloaded from [ http://taazi.com/MahaAli ]
Thankyou very much MAHA for taking out time and sharing your experiences with us. Wish you all the very best of luck for your future career.
